Heavenly light, Earthly night Edition 2008

The theme of this festival is Heavenly light, Earthly night. This forms the inspiration for a wonderfully varied programme with chamber music in all shapes and forms, from solo sonata to sinfonia concertante, from duo to septet.

    Top-class international musicians

A variety of great international musicians are contributing to the festival, including violinist Gidon Kremer, the Skampa Quartet, violist Vladimir Mendelssohn, horn player Hervé Joulain, pianist Peter Frankl, flutist Janne Thomsen, clarinettist Emma Johnson and the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie.

    Contemporary
Music of our time forms the common theme throughout the festival: work from the Georgian composer Giya Kantsjeli can be found four times on the music stands. We will also hear pieces by Willem Jeths and Ron Ford. From Jeths we will hear Chiasmos for piano trio and Chiaroscuro for piano solo.

    World première
The American/Dutch composer Ron Ford has written the commission piece for the Storioni Festival, entitled In my dream for soprano and piano trio. The opening concert on 24 January will see the world premiere of this piece, and three more of Ford’s creations will be performed during the festival.

    Golden classics
As well as contemporary music, the festival will also showcase many pieces that could be described as golden classics. During the Storioni Nacht on Saturday evening 26 January, for example, we will hear Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Saint-Saëns’ Carnaval des Animaux and Schubert’s Trout Quintet. During this concert, the large Eindhoven Airport Zaal of the Muziekcentrum will be transformed into an intimate theatre with a rotating stage. Also included in the programme are famous pieces such as Beethoven’s Septet, Mozart’s Concert for two pianos and the Horn trio by Brahms.
