Theme: ‘Stories and Silence’
The naughty pranks of Tijl Uilenspiegel. The Lebensstürme by Franz Schubert. The violin playing soldier who sells his soul to the devil. Robert Schumann’s fairytales... Beautiful stories hide behind many musical pieces. The Storioni Trio decided that ‘Stories and Silence’ should be the theme of this festival. And so we hear a Russian Animal Farm over the founders of the New Soviet State, by composer Nodar Gabunia, which is tentatively known as ‘Fable’. Mauricio Kagel brings together two cellists and a percussionist to battle on the stage. And yet this festival is not so much about the story in the literal sense of the word, but more about the musical message as a link with image or atmosphere.
Composers-in-residence
A festival is not a festival without a composer-in-residence. The Storioni Festival even has two... James MacMillan and Peter-Jan Wagemans. The Scot will undoubtedly triumph during the festival with his instantly appealing and expressive music. His worldwide hit ‘Seven Last Words from the Cross’ will be performed by the Nederlands Kamerkoor and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Peter-Jan Wagemans is a home-grown composer. His monumental sound has been compared to that of Messiaen and he is an excellent narrative composer. His piece ‘Three love melodies’ for piano trio will premiere in the Muziekcentrum during the opening concert on Friday 15 January.
Special guests
This third edition of the festival once again welcomes world-famous musicians onto the stage: cellist Natalia Gutman, soprano Nelly Miricioiu, pianist Alfred Brendel – who again performs in the capacity of poet – and many more. They are all musical greats that have worked together with the Storioni Trio on beautiful renditions, and that will undoubtedly deliver many highlights of this year’s festival. The Nederlands Kamerkoor and Amsterdam Sinfoniëtta will begin their tour with MacMillan’s ‘Seven Last Words from the Cross’ and Fauré’s ‘Requiem’. And we also eagerly await the concert with Shostakovich’s ‘Seven romances’ that will be accompanied by dancers from Dance Works Rotterdam.
